A Supernatural Horror Action Dramedy

I drew this piece in the Kubert School in 2021
TL;DR I’m making a new comic.
AIR-RIDER is currently ON HOLD.🥲
I developed this story YEARS ago in 2018:
Before I went to the Kubert school, I wrote a story about two girls, named Vivi and Chelsea.
Vivi was a tabloid photographer and her friend, Chelsea, was a boy-crazy aspiring Hollywood starlet.
It was meant to be a simple story about chasing fame in Hollywood, but finding friendship instead…

…until I spiced it up with DEMONS. 😈
I knew when I dusted off the idea for my 3rd year Kubert school writing class, I needed a special ingredient to make it POP.
So I injected a supernatural element to allow my imagination to go wild.
THAT is when it became…
I developed the idea (and the logo) in Erica Schultz’s writing class. She was one of those teachers you really wanted to impress. A hard-driving comics writer working in the industry and teaching us at the same time.
You did NOT want to half-ass her class, or you’d risk death.
Or even worse, her wrath.
So I brought out my BEST (non-AIR-RIDER) idea and put together SAINTLY.
Luckily, I got her quality seal of approval.
SAINTLY was pretty good at that point.
It’s even better now.
Years later, I casually introduced the idea to my long time mentor Ngozi Ukazu (creator of Check, Please), during a meet up.
We first met in 2018, at my first ever New York Comic-Con, a field trip with the Kubert School.
I KNEW she would be there.
And I had to meet her.
She was the only proof to my parents that a Nigerian could SUCCEED in comics if they just kept going!
Fast forward 6 years later, we’re having coffee and she asks me about any ideas I had outside of AIR-RIDER.
I offhandedly mentioned an idea I developed during school called SAINTLY, a story about two girls who get into some supernatural hijinks when one of them has to pay back a loan she borrowed from demons.
“SOLD.”
I gulped. “Really?”
Starting this comic would mean slowing down or potentially cancelling AIR-RIDER, my first serious comic project.
But I’d always planned to reboot it after the current run.
So if I could make a story in the meantime to develop my skills further, SAINTLY would be it.
It took several more drafts to develop a story good enough to make these characters shine, but now I think I’ve got it.
It’s gonna be funny, sad, weird, scary and sexy.
Basically everything you’d love about your favorite anime or webtoon.
The comic’s not coming out right this minute, but you can follow the development on my Twitter and Instagram as I post about it.
So Where does AIR-RIDER go from here?
I’ve finished most of Chapter #3.
I just need to letter it for you to read.
Chapter #2 is printing for backers of the Kickstarter, but as far I’m concerned, this version of AIR-RIDER is on indefinite hiatus.
It’s very rare to strike gold with one’s first story ever.
I’ve learned so much by creating AIR-RIDER. So if it’s goodbye for now, the only way to honor it is by giving everything I’ve got to this next project, so the reboot stands a chance of success.
Hope you’ll continue to follow me for this exciting new chapter!
I aim to draw comics that make you feel ALIVE!
Stay tuned.
PEACE,
-Ken
